London, 11th August – itelligence announced today that Newcastle University has migrated its system landscape to the SAP HANA® platform. Mindful of the paradigm-shifting possibilities of SAP HANA, the University delivered a business case assessment followed by a proof of concept which led to the migration of its existing SAP® software landscape to SAP HANA.
The University had been running SAP software for core processes such as finance, HCM and SRM to student lifecycle management and business warehouse. With the University’s commitment to SAP and close alignment with the SAP roadmap, a project was initiated to move to SAP HANA. The first-phase migration from the Oracle database to the SAP HANA platform was completed in early March and the system went into production in July.
Jonathan Taylor, Assistant Director – Corporate Systems, Newcastle University, commented, “SAP HANA is a revolutionary platform which operates up to 1000x faster than applications running on a standard database. This capability to process vast quantities of data in real time will allow the University to reimagine business processes and undertake complex analysis tasks which previously would have been all but impossible.”
Newcastle University delivered the earlier proof of concept with support from itelligence, which resulted in the ability to deliver SAP HANA with the University’s own dedicated team. Alan Cecchini, Newcastle University’s SAP Development Manager, commented, “We had to ensure we could demonstrate significant performance improvements to give us confidence that SAP HANA could deliver real-time data to our users. We not only proved this but also identified how we could free up time to deliver innovative new processes.” The University will now benefit from real-time information to support decision-making including big data analysis and predictive analysis. The University will also be able to leverage the SAP Fiori® user experience and create a simpler unified landscape and database layer.
Chris Burns, Corporate Systems Technical Manager, Newcastle University, added, “Big shout out to itelligence. They persuaded our CFO that SAP HANA was the way to go, and it probably wouldn’t be here today without their help.”
The UK university environment has changed dramatically in recent years, with higher education establishments increasingly run as businesses, charging for services, competing for students, sourcing research funds, leveraging brand equity and controlling operating costs. This competitive environment is driving digital transformation with the need to treat students like customers, who need to be attracted, nurtured and maintained.
Justin Brading VP & UK MD, itelligence UK, commented, “Newcastle University is among the first UK universities to move to SAP HANA, and it is highly rewarding to see a well-established and respected university embark on a journey of digital transformation. We expect that the University’s move to SAP HANA will present a solid future-proof foundation for maximising student engagement around attracting, enrolling, retaining, planning and performance.”
