SAP HANA can do a lot when it comes to maximizing enterprise applications, but can it cure cancer? Actually, maybe it can help. SAP recently expanded into the healthcare arena by teaming with MolecularHealth gmbh, a clinico-molecular informatics company to integrate SAP HANA with MolecularHealth’s oncology treatment decision support solution. The MolecularHealth Oncolizer, a customized version of HANA, creates a better system for doctors as they make treatment decisions for their patients. How, you ask? Let me explain.
MolecularHealth’s Oncolizer uses SAP HANA to build a system that tracks all cancer patients worldwide and notes their symptoms, treatment, response to treatment, lifestyle, etc. This can be exceptionally helpful for doctors to easily search for another patient with a similar profile to get suggestions on courses of treatments that have worked for others.
This sophisticated technology can speed up the interpretation engine by enabling real-time look-ups and faster information pulls from the proprietary knowledge base. Retrospective and predictive modeling components within HANA will also shorten the analysis time. The software will help clinicians quickly process large quantities of sequence data and perform complex analytics faster than ever.
MolecularHealth’s solution will let oncologists use a combination of clinical information, molecular data from tumor and normal cells, and drug data to select the most effective treatments for their patients. It will also provide a set of treatment options that are specific to each patient. Using supporting evidence from research studies, users will also be able to create patient-specific therapeutic system models. Furthermore, SAP’s technology can help oncologists deal with some of the more compute-intensive parts of processing whole-genome data such as sequence alignment and variant calling.
The oncology community has historically embraced tools that make personalizing treatments easier and the SAP MoecularHealth integration accomplishes just that. In reality, this is the only platform available today that harnesses the power of in-memory computing to help cancer patients. But this is just the beginning. SAP is planning even more life-science partnerships for its HANA platform, so the next medical breakthrough could be around the corner thanks to SAP HANA.
