The Digital Transformation Journey: Creating A Digital Vision for Your Organization

Digital Transformation

How can I ensure my organization is embracing the digital transformation? Are we doing enough in this area? Do we understand what needs to be done? These questions are on every business leader’s mind – or if not, they should be. In this blog series, we’ll explore the journey of digital transformation and what that means for your organization, your IT infrastructure, and in this post, your vision as a business leader.

The journey through digital transformation starts with creating a digital vision. As we counsel executives and business leaders, this topic invariably comes up time and again, and it’s no longer limited to IT. Being a digital organization entails a companywide impact and involves all aspects of the business.

Build Your Digital Vision

What does it mean to be a digital organization? What areas of your organization will become digital – all of them? Some of them? These questions must be answered by business leaders, but they don’t need to take on this challenge alone. The digitization of business is moving rapidly, and bringing in experts to help you brainstorm and determine what’s best for your organization will be time and money well spent.

Ultimately, no one knows your business better then you do. Business leaders must help drive the conversation, but smart leaders must also be listeners. If possible, open the conversation up to bright young people in your organization, who may be closer to the new digital world and all it has to offer.

There’s No Single Definition

Becoming a digital organization is not a single change or action. This evolution can take any number of routes, including any or all of the below:

  • Connected Customer Experience: Offer a seamless and engaging experience for your customers as they interact with your organization.
  • Connected Supply Chain: Keep suppliers constantly and efficiently connected to your organization digitally, so they can provide you with the most efficient solutions.
  • Connected Workforce: Ensure your employees and sub-contractors are equally connected with the business and are hyper-aware of changing business and customer needs.
  • Connected Machines: How will the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 impact your business? You may need both a defensive and an offensive strategy to take advantage of new opportunities and keep up with a changing landscape.
  • Big Data and Analytics: Reporting is no longer the end point. These powerful tools offer the ability to analyze your business in real time and enable you to make smarter business decisions

Go Big or Go Home

Whether or not you are going to tackle all aspects of digitization, it’s important to create a vision which covers all aspects of digital transformation. From there, you can decide what your priorities are and which initiatives you want your organization to work on first.

In the second part of our Digital Transformation Journey Series, we will discuss the important role SAP S/4HANA can play in your transformation.
