This blog examines our customer’s performance benchmark comparison while evaluating a move to SAP BPC 10.1 HANA. At the end of 2014, SAP was working with a large global manufacturer with a far-reaching SAP HANA license investment to implement the in-memory database management system. In addition to making this strategic business investment, the company wanted to make their BPC solution a complementary part of that business process and determine the right in-memory scenario. There were a number of daily, calculation-intensive/time consuming efforts involving the loading and submission of data which then needed to be reported, retrieved and queried, among others.
Through the initial planning and discussion process, SAP recognized that in order to execute and update the business processes the customer desired, as well as address some existing performance related challenges, the company would need to migrate from their current version of BPC NW 7.5 to BPC NW 10.1 Standard. SAP immediately brought itelligence in to drive the process.
Looking at the twofold scenario, itelligence and the customer wanted to test BPC on the current version/configuration, inclusive of an IBM physical database scenario versus running BPC on SAP HANA, and also test in the context of an upgrade from BPC 7.5 to BPC 10.1. From there, the proof of concept (POC) was established in order to determine what results the company would see from the upgrade and benchmark results to see if performance improved.
BPC Benchmark Study
Through dedicated project resources on both sides, the result was a collaborative process that never re-engineered or changed design/structural aspects. itelligence and the customer identified key application components including data load routines, reports, input templates and logic related content (script based and BADI) to be tested as part of the initiative. A copy of the BPC 7.5 environment was backed up from the client’s production system and restored onto itelligence’s hosted BPC 10.1 NW Standard SAP HANA based system. The copied environment was representative of existing workloads. Modifications were minor in nature and strictly for BPC 10.1 compliance.

Results by the Numbers
Below are the results of the formal simulation run as part of the POC initiative. As noted, the comparison was based on a BPC 7.5 NW system leveraging BW Classic vs. an itelligence hosted BPC 10.1 NW Standard system utilizing BW on HANA.
In the end, the benchmarking process led by itelligence was a success. The customer was extremely happy with the results, and they achieved improved performance on a number of different levels with the upgraded version of SAP BPC 10.1 HANA. They are currently moving on to SAP HANA and BPC 10.1 NW Standard and will look to itelligence leading the technical migration effort for both landscapes.
